Las Palomas Taqueria offers a straightforward, no-frills Mexican dining experience right in the heart of San Mateo. Located on E 3rd Ave, this spot draws a steady local crowd looking for generous portions of authentically prepared dishes without the fuss of fancy decor. The interior is simple—think basic tables and chairs—letting the food and service take center stage.

The menu covers a broad spectrum of Mexican favorites, from hearty breakfast options like huevos rancheros and chilaquiles rojos, to lunch staples including birria goat tacos, shrimp fajitas, and their well-praised wet burritos. One standout feature is the salsa bar, which provides a variety of fresh salsas that complement dishes and invite you to customize flavors throughout your meal. The chips here are consistently fresh and plentiful, making a satisfying start or accompaniment to your meal.

Visitors often highlight friendly, patient service that matches the warm, casual vibe of the place. This is a spot where families and groups can comfortably linger over plates of rich stews like caldo de res, crispy chimichangas, or veggie tostadas. Drinks like Mexican Coke and horchata add an authentic, refreshing touch to the overall dining experience.

Las Palomas is best for those who appreciate hearty Mexican cooking served with straightforward hospitality. It tends to be lively but relaxed, and since the seating is ample, it’s a good choice for both quick lunches and more leisurely dinners. Locals seem to appreciate the generous portions and genuinely homey flavors, often returning for larger meals like the carne asada burrito, which is known to pack a serious punch on size and taste.

Visiting around mealtime ensures the salsa bar is well stocked and the kitchen is firing on all cylinders, but the welcoming staff keeps the pace comfortable no matter when you come through. Overall, this is a dependable spot for anyone wanting satisfying, bold Mexican food in a practical setting with attentive service.

Delicious and very flavorful food. Everybody there was so nice and patient. I had the best meaty fries of my whole life, and their menu is huge and my family loved the food as well. I will be coming back and I highly recommend coming to this restaurant to everybody in the area.

Our first time here. We wandered in at random and were so glad we did. The restaurant is a large and barebones - simple tables and chairs. But the food is excellent. Lots of Mexican favorites, well cooked and delicious. The staff were friendly and patient. Overall a great meal.

One of the best wet burritos I have ever had. The asada had perfect flavor, and the sauce was absolutely delicious. The salsa bar was wonderful and the chips were really good (and unlimited, if you just ask for more!) They were extremely nice and the place is beautiful, with clean bathrooms.

If you thought your 30+ year old favorite spot from 3rd street was gone, have no fear, they’ve just moved! The same AMAZING food, full of fresh flavor and quality ingredients in a new location! The family is still here cooking, catering and serving! I could NOT pass up a super carne asada burrito and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! I weighed it at home 2lbs + of flavor. Don’t forget the real Mexican Coke and Salsa Bar!

Huge portions/size of food items. Super veggie burrito and Veggie avocado tostadas were nice. Great service, very hospitable server. Their salsa bar is just killer with 7 different types of salsa/sauce and pickled vegetables. Just wonderful.
